what is coronavirus?
Coronaviruses, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), are a large family of viruses that can cause a range of illnesses, from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) — the latter of which also began in China and infected some 8,000 people during a 2002-2003 outbreak. At least 770 died after it spread to other cities and countries across the world. Coronaviruses can spread between animals and people — meaning they are zoonotic. Officials have said the current outbreak, COVID-19, likely began at an animal and seafood market in Wuhan.
What are the coronavirus symptoms?
Coronavirus infects the lungs. The symptoms start with a fever followed by a dry cough, which can lead to breathing problems. It takes five days on average to start showing the symptoms, scientists have said, but some people will get symptoms much later than this. The incubation period lasts up to 14 days, the World Health Organization (WHO) says. But some researchers say it may be up to 24 days.
People will be most infectious when they have symptoms, but there have been suggestions some can spread the virus even before they are sick. The early symptoms can easily be confused with other winter bugs including colds and flu.
How do I protect myself from COVID-19?
Returning to University for Semester 1 it is a timely reminder of the importance of following hygiene principles to prevent the spread of any illnesses.
1- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
2- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Alternatively, sneeze or cough into your inner elbow.
3- Dispose of used tissues into a plastic-lined rubbish bin immediately after use.
4- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as infections spread that way.
5- Not share eating utensils, food or drinks.
6- Clean surfaces regularly, such as bathroom sinks and taps, kitchen sinks and counters.
7- Don’t go to work if you are unwell and don’t send your children to school or childcare if they are unwell. Seek medical attention.
