After reading this article you will be able to better understand different types of stairs and you will be able to select the suitable stairs for building. Here we will explain some main types of stairs.

Types of stair in the building

1- Straight stair

2- Half turn stairs

3- Circular stairs

4- Three quarter turn stairs

5- Spiral stairs

6- Bifurcated stairs

1- Straight stair

Despite its simplicity, it is convenient and functional. The usage of staircases with straight flight is feasible only in those cases when we need to join two levels connected by an imaginary straight line. Straight stairs change no direction on any flight between two successive floors.

2- Half turn stairs

Half landing stairs have a landing, but it changes the direction of the flight by 180 degrees already and also serves as a place for rest when moving. There are 3 types:

1- Dog legged Stair

2- Open newel Half turn stair

3- Geometrical half-turn stair

Dog Legged stair

A dog-leg is a configuration of stairs between two floors of a building, often a domestic building, in which a flight of stairs ascends to a half-landing before turning at a right angle and continuing upwards. The flights do not have to be equal and frequently are not.

Open newel Half turn stair

This type of stairway is built around a wall and has open spaces between its strings. Open newel stair is mostly adopted in the lift.

Geometrical half-turn stair

This type of staircase has no newel post. There are many geometrical shapes of these stairs. By using winders change of direction is achieved.

3- Circular stairs

Circular stairs can give us the view from the top of this stair the same like a circle, therefore its called circular stairs. This types of stairs are used in the building where we don’t have too much space. The circular stair is adopted at the backside of a building to access its various floors. This types of stairs are construct from the RCC and Cast iron.

4- Three quarter turn stairs

This types of stair change direction three times and they are turned at 90 degrees with the help of level landing. This is the open newel stairs and should be designed when the vertical distance between two floors is more than we have to design three quarter turn stairs.

5- Spiral stairs

Spiral stairs are similar to circular stairs except that the radius of curvature is small. These stairs consist of individual steps or treads, connecting to a centre column. The overall diameter of such stairs may range from 1 to 2.5 m. this types of stairs are the same like circular shape.

6- Bifurcated stairs

The Bifurcated stairs are generally used in public buildings. The stairs flight is so arranged that there is a wide flight at the start which is sub-divided into narrow flights at the mid-landing. The narrow flights start from either side of the mid landing.
