What is Ferrocement?

Ferrocement is a construction material consisting of wire meshes and cement mortar. Applications of error cement in construction are vast due to the low self-weight, lack of skilled workers, no need for framework etc. It was developed by P.L.Nervi, an Italian architect in 1940. Quality of error cement works is assured because the components are manufactured on machinery set up and execution time at the worksite is less. Cost of maintenance is low. This material has come into widespread use only in construction in the last two decades.

Properties of Ferro-cement

1- Its strength per unit mass is high.

2- It has the capacity to resist the shock load.

3- It can be given an attractive finish like that of teak and rosewood.

4- Ferro cement elements can be constructed without using formwork.

5- It is impervious.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Ferrocement

Advantages

1- Basic raw materials are readily available in most countries.

2- Fabricated into any desired shape.

3- Low labour skill required.

4- Ease of construction, low weight and long lifetime.

5- Low construction material cost.

6- Better resistance against earthquake.

Disadvantages

1- Structures made of it can be punctured by collision with pointed objects.

2- Corrosion of the reinforcing materials due to the incomplete coverage of metal by mortar.

3- It is difficult to fasten to Ferrocement with bolts, screws, welding and nail etc.

4-Large no of labours required.

5- Cost of semi-skilled and unskilled labours is high.

6- Tying rods and mesh together is especially tedious and time-consuming.

Uses of Ferro-cement

It can be used for making:

1- Partition walls

2- Window frames, drops

3- Shelf of cupboards

4- Door and window shutters

5- Domestic water tanks

6- Precast roof elements

7- Reapers and rafters required for supporting roof tiles.

8- Pipes

9- Silos

10- Types of Furniture

11- Manhole covers

12- Boats.
